Accused Bondi Beach Shooters Operated Alone and Received No Preparation in the Philippines, Investigators Say.

The two suspected individuals who carried out the deadly shooting at a Jewish event on Bondi Beach, which claimed 15 lives, appear to have been lone actors, as stated by Australian authorities.

Investigators further stated that Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed Akram journeyed to the Philippines on 1 November. Their itinerary included arriving in the capital Manila before transiting on the day of arrival to Davao City. The duo flew back to Sydney on 29 November.

Lack of Proof of Training During Trip

Investigators assert the individuals did not undergo any form of attack-related coaching or "logistical preparation" during their stay in the Philippines. Preliminary findings from Philippine officials point to they "hardly ventured out of" their accommodation.

The attack—described as Australia's most severe firearm massacre since 1996—has been officially classified as a act of terrorism.

"We are actively examining the footage," the commissioner said, explaining that early assessments indicate that "the alleged offenders are suspected to have operated independently."

Australian Federal Police Chief Krissy Barrett briefed the press on Tuesday that surveillance material tracking the accused attackers' activities in the Philippines had been handed over to domestic investigators.

"There is no evidence to indicate these alleged offenders were members of a wider organization, or were directed by overseas entities to perpetrate an incident," she emphasized.

However, the men were also not in the Philippines on a leisure trip, Commissioner Barrett clarified. She emphasized that, as the inquiry is still active, fresh information may come to light.

Motivation and Legal Charges

Previously, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it looks as though both accused gunmen were "influenced by Islamic State" ideology.

During the shooting, Sajid Akram was shot dead by police. He and his son Naveed—reportedly carrying rifles—allegedly shot attendees at the Jewish festival event.

Naveed Akram, who was injured and taken to hospital after the attack, has been charged with 59 charges. These comprise 15 charges of murder and one count of perpetrating a terrorist act. He is scheduled to face court in April.

Immigration Particulars

In the days following the shooting, border authorities in the Philippines indicated that the older suspect had arrived in the country using an Indian passport, while his younger suspect used an Australian passport.

The two had listed the southern city of Davao as their final destination. Their scheduled journey back to Australia was for Sydney.

Davao is a large city on the east of Mindanao, the Philippines' main southern island. The region is known because, Islamist groups have been known to be active in poorer parts of central and south-western Mindanao.
