British Government Withdraws Major Loan for Mozambique LNG Initiative Amid Environmental and Terrorism Worries
The British government has canceled a disputed $1.15 bn loan supporting a massive LNG project in the African nation of Mozambique, after growing accusations that the initiative exacerbates the global warming and militant violence in the area.
Government Announcement and Rationale
Business Secretary the Business Secretary announced that the UK would end its financial support for the gas venture, marking five years after the deal sparked strong criticism from advocacy groups over its effects on local communities, safety, and the planet.
“Although these decisions are never simple, the administration holds the view that UK support of this project will not serve the needs of our nation,” said the minister.
The move came to light as the scheme's developer, French energy major TotalEnergies, is set to restart the problem-plagued initiative, which has been on hold since a devastating militant attack on a local community in 2021 resulted in hundreds of deaths.
Background and Growing Risks
The support package was originally sanctioned in 2020. Authorities stated they had reviewed the risks surrounding the project and determined they had grown substantially since that time.
Initially, the UK's finance body had argued the scheme would support thousands of UK employment opportunities and could be “transformational for Mozambique's financial and social development.”
However, environmental campaigns have consistently contended that the African nation should be supported to invest more heavily in clean power to develop a sustainable low-carbon future.
Opposition and Appeals for Broader Action
The initiative served as a lightning rod for violence in the region and was also alleged of violating the human rights of indigenous people who were moved when construction work commenced.
“It has been evident for years that this project is a disaster for local communities and for the environment,” said one advocate from a sustainable finance group. He called on leading financial institutions funding the venture to withdraw their involvement, arguing they “can no longer turn a blind eye the issues.”
Another prominent environmental advocate remarked: “This Mozambique gas project is a massive climate liability, connected to significant violations. It should never have been given UK taxpayer-funded support in the first place.”
The campaigner further urged that the UK should instead support countries like Mozambique by aiding them to become resilient to the effects of the climate change and invest in their abundant renewable resources.
