England's Assistant Coach Shares The Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
A decade ago, Anthony Barry featured at a lower division club. Today, he's dedicated to assist the England manager secure World Cup glory next summer. His path from player to coach commenced through volunteering with the youth team. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He had found his calling.
Metoric Climb
His advancement stands out. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a reputation through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His club career included Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad across multiple countries. His players include stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the top in his words.
“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We must create a methodical process that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”
Detail-Oriented Approach
Passion, particularly on fine points, is central to his philosophy. Toiling around the clock day and night, they both challenge limits. The approach feature player analysis, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the England collective and rejects terms including "pause".
“This isn't a vacation or a pause,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”
Greedy Coaches
He characterizes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own the whole ground and that’s what we spend many of our days on. It’s our job not only to stay ahead of the trends but to surpass them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And to clarify complicated matters.
“There are 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We need to execute a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in that period. It’s to take it from concept to details to understanding to action.
“To develop a process enabling productivity during the limited time, we must utilize all the time available from when we started. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”
World Cup Qualifiers
The coach is focusing ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament by winning all six games without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. Now is the moment to build on the team's style, for further momentum.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy must reflect the best aspects about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the versatility, the robustness, the integrity. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.
“To make it light, we need to provide a style that allows them to operate as they do in club games, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and focus more on action.
“There are morale boosts for managers at both ends of the pitch – building from the defense, attacking high up. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information now. They know how to set up – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to speed up play across those 24 metres.”
Thirst for Improvement
The coach's thirst for improvement is relentless. While training for his pro license, he was worried regarding the final talk, as his cohort contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he sought out tough situations available to him to practise giving them. Such as Walton jail locally, where he also took inmates for a training session.
He earned his license with top honors, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Lampard was among those convinced and he hired Barry on to his staff at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.
His replacement with the club became Tuchel, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry stayed on in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to rejoin him. English football's governing body view them as a partnership like previous management pairs.
