Food Benefits Scheduled to Cease for 41 Million During Ongoing US Government Shutdown

USDA officials declared this past weekend that nutrition assistance payments under one of the country’s largest support systems will not be distributed during the coming month amid the persistent federal government shutdown.

Closure Continues For Nearly Four Weeks

The government shutdown lasted three and a half weeks as officials revealed the news, which followed demands from hundreds of Congressional Democrats asking the department to utilize emergency reserves to fund next month's benefits.

“Bottom line, funds are depleted,” officials announced. “Currently, there will be no benefits issued” starting next month.

Widespread Impact

Over 40 million Americans rely on these monthly payments, according to federal data. In certain states, including New Mexico, dependence on this assistance affects 21% of residents.

Internal communications seen by Reuters revealed that federal authorities would not access emergency reserves for the upcoming payments.

Legislative Deadlock

Congressional leaders remain deadlocked regarding how to fund and reopen government operations.

A statement from the director at a budget research center noted that the administration had opportunities to take earlier action to prevent benefits from running out.

“It could have, and should have made moves before now to make arrangements to access these resources,” the remarks concluded. “Conversely, it may choose not to use them in an effort to gain political advantage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to influence Democratic senators to vote for a spending bill to restart the federal government.

States Prepare

Governors in two affected states declared states of emergency in recent days to allocate funds to address food insecurity expecting food benefits expiring next month.
