Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Icon, Dies at Eighty-One Years of Age
The world grieves the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican musician and performer whose distinctive vocal talent was instrumental in spreading the reggae genre worldwide. The artist has died at the age of 81.
“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” wrote his wife Latifa on social media. “I am grateful for his family, friends, fellow artists and colleagues who walked with him on his life’s path. To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength during his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.
Cliff was beloved for hits including You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic musical style and uplifting temperament brought him a large and longstanding fanbase.
Beyond his music achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 drama film “The Harder They Come”, a role that received critical praise and is viewed as a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.
Jimmy Cliff is among the select few of artists, including Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the prestigious Jamaican Order of Merit.
