Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities issued surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
