Larian Studios Explains Its Use of AI Tools for New Divinity

The studio behind popular titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just unveiled its next major project, generating significant excitement within the gaming community. However, recent statements from the studio's lead designer have added a new dimension to the discussion, touching on the team's approach toward AI tools.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a new statement, the studio's founder detailed that the developer is utilizing machine learning for particular ancillary functions. These encompass developing presentation materials, creating rough artistic references, and creating draft copy.

Crucially, Vincke made clear that the shipping assets in the game will be authored entirely by real artists. "Larian is writing all the content in-house," he said.

We are actively increasing our team of writers and are currently assembling writing teams.

Given that visual development is being particularly mentioned — we presently have twenty-three artistic staff and have roles to fill for additional artists.

Everything we do is supplementary and designed to letting our team spend greater focus on actual creation.

Every AI system used well is a boost to a developer's process, not a substitute for their talent.

Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path

The admission of AI usage at first generated unease among a segment of the fanbase. In response, Vincke offered additional detail on social media.

"Our team utilizes these tools to gather inspiration, just like we use the internet and art books," he wrote. "In the initial ideation stages we use it as a simple sketch for composition which we then substitute with authentic illustrations."

He continued, "Larian brings on creatives for their creative vision, not for their capacity to execute what a AI generates."

Focused Uses for Machine Learning

Vincke had earlier outlined the team's focused strategy to machine learning, grouping its use into three main areas:

  • Handling Monotonous Jobs: This includes motion capture cleaning, voice editing, and technical processes like adjusting assets for various species.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using systems to rapidly prototype simple mock-ups of scenarios to validate concepts before complete development.
  • Experimental Frontiers: Investigating how machine learning could in the future enhance emergent reactivity, particularly in simulating player-driven narratives in a vast role-playing world.

He clearly noted that central narrative areas — like visual art — are are in no way departments where the company is cutting creative talent. Conversely, Larian is expanding its staff in these exact positions.

"Larian is not launching a game with any AI components, and we are certainly not considering cutting staff to substitute them with AI," Vincke stated definitively.
