Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
