Weather experts have indicated an icy beginning to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Revelers are advised to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Plans Continue In Spite of Warnings

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, a contrast to last year's postponement. This proceeds amid advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Drop Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to plummet as snowfall and high winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Warnings Activated

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this meant the weather could to cause major effects across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
