Seattle's Pride Celebrations to Proceed for World Cup Despite Formal Protests from Iran and Egypt
Arrangements to hold LGBTQ+ rights events and activities throughout the city amid next summer’s World Cup will continue unabated, despite Iranian and Egyptian football federations raised strong concerns regarding a planned “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy Alongside City Celebrations
Local organizers stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. This coincides with the tournament group fixture between Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Additionally, FIFA will permit Pride flags to be brought into the stadium.
“As the local organising committee, our role is to get the city ready to host the matches and oversee the city experience beyond Seattle Stadium,” stated the vice-president of communications.
Cultural Background Behind the Formal Complaints
Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The Egyptian federation stated it did not want to be associated with events that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation also raised “its opposition against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance on Symbols
Fifa maintains operational control over match venues on matchdays. While its rules forbid banners and flags with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This policy was applied at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of flags being seized.
