Seconds before he was crowned, a nervous worry raced through Rory McIlroy's mind. He revealed he was hoping, "Please don't let it be a Formula 1 star this time."

"It's been a great night for golf," the champion said. "The sport was celebrated in such a major way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and perhaps we can build upon that."

On this occasion, however, there was no dramatic upset. The result was uncontested, allowing a delighted McIlroy to enjoy a standout evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were honored as the top squad.

Constant Motion

Choosing not to attend the official reception, McIlroy was already thinking about his immediate plans. After played in a tournament in Florida and flown to the UK, he was returning immediately to Miami.

"I've had a frantic 24 hours," McIlroy explained. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of rest over Christmas."

Drive to Improve

However, McIlroy insisted he has no intention to become complacent, even after completing the career grand slam earlier in the year. "I am confident I've got a several strong seasons in me," he asserted.

"Further big titles, tour championships, international events, that's the aim. But if you feel like you can keep progressing and have the desire, that's the essential part."

Squad Celebration

At the same time, fellow European Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the team award, also praised golf's remarkable night and his great friend's personal achievement.

"These become the moments that will remain with us forever so to get the fan's acknowledgment for that is really cool," Fleetwood said. "Seeing Rory receive that award, I think he has earned it so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third player from golf to win the award in its long history, Fleetwood grinned before adding, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"

Future Goals

He is aiming to secure his initial major championship next year but he understands McIlroy still desires more success. "Provided that you want to be the best you can be, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to improve," the 34-year-old said.

United Hopes

As he was leaving, an additional topic arose. As a huge Manchester United fan, he has been invited to show his trophies at Old Trafford before. Might he be persuaded to do it again after his new triumphs?

"As long as they quit letting in multiple scores in Manchester," McIlroy responded with a grin. "Improvements are being made. There's a little bit of positivity around."

Following a remarkable year, it's no wonder that Rory McIlroy is seeing the bright side.
