The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
