The Renowned Filmmaker Delivers Emotional Homage to His Late Co-Star

In the wake of the death of Diane Keaton at age 79, Woody Allen has released a detailed tribute celebrating her legacy and their longstanding relationship.

Recalling a Remarkable Friendship

In a recently published article, the filmmaker, 89, wrote about their time together from their first introduction in 1969 during rehearsals for his play Play It Again, Sam, spanning their five-year love affair and the multiple projects they collaborated on.

“With the passage of time, I directed pictures for an audience of one, Keaton herself,” he expressed. “I never read a critic’s opinion of my work and was concerned exclusively with what she had to say about it.”

He added that she was “one of a kind the earth has seen or is unlikely to ever see again,” and that “her presence and joy illuminated any space she stepped into.”

Surprising Death and Enduring Impressions

Keaton succumbed after falling ill at her residence in Los Angeles. She had been out of the public eye for some months, and a confidant shared that although no specific condition had been disclosed, her health had declined rapidly, with many of her close friends not knowing that she was suffering.

Her death nonetheless appeared to be a surprise even to her closest circle.

“A few days ago, the world was a existence that featured Keaton,” notes Allen. “Now it’s a world that does not. Therefore, it’s a darker world. Nevertheless, there are her movies. And her wonderful chuckle still echoes in my head.”

Loyal Allegiance Amid Controversy

Keaton remained a staunch supporter of the filmmaker after the resurfacing of a 1992 abuse allegation leveled at him by Dylan Farrow throughout a custody battle.

The accusation was carefully probed and then dismissed by multiple authorities, and no legal actions were brought.

“He is my friend and I maintain faith in him,” she commented of the allegation when it picked up renewed momentum as part of the #MeToo movement. “It may be worthwhile to examine the 60 Minutes interview from 1992 and form your own opinion.”

Continuing Impact

In his personal account, Allen referred to Keaton as his “true compass”; the figure whose opinion means the most.

Speaking in the previous year, Keaton noted: “He was so incredible. It always was really unique to be with Woody. He was fantastic. He was all that and more, and he continues to be [so] to me. He gave me endless opportunities. He truly did. Allen made it loose. That helped me enormously.”

Personal Moments

The piece includes recollections of their time together beyond the set, including a unforgettable Thanksgiving enjoying a game with her family, and remarks of their relationship: “We had a several wonderful private moments together and finally we both parted paths, and what led to our split only higher powers and psychology might be able to figure out.”

In that year, Allen set aside his reluctance to attend events to honor her with the prestigious honor, stating: “The minute I met her, she was a great, great inspiration to me. A great deal of what I’ve accomplished in my life I attribute, for sure, to her. Seeing life through her eyes. She really is remarkable. This is a person who is excellent in each thing she does.”
